Kongo Rikishi (Deva King) (金剛力士) (Standard) from Isumu. Isumu's focus is to recreate in our modern lives the traditional Buddhist statues which the Japanese culture has cherished so much. Click here to learn more about Isumu

  • Part of Isumu's Standard lineup
  • This product includes a set of two Buddhist statues; A-gyou who is opening its mouth and Un-gyou who is closing its mouth
  • These statues are a replica of the original statues designated as the Japanese national treasure made in the Kamakura period (1185-1333). Note that in the replica Isumu has "restored" some parts of the original statute, e.g., Un-gyou's right arm which is lost in the original
  • Kongo Rikishi serve as guardians against the enemies of Buddhism, and their statues are typically placed at the gate near a temple entrance. The first guardian’s (A-gyou's) mouth is open and form the sound “a”, while the second's (Un-gyou's) is closed to form the sound “un”. The combination of these two sounds is referred to as “a-un”, which is used in the Japanese expression “a-un no kokyu (a-un breathing).” This means the perfectly synchronized minds of two persons committing one act
